On Monday’s broadcast of the Fox News Channel’s “Jesse Watters Primetime,” Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed said that he is “not going to defend the Green New Deal” and responded to his prior support of the deal by saying that he supports lowering energy costs and creating jobs.
Host Jesse Watters asked, [relevant exchange begins around 2:45] “Green New Deal, you backed that up. Do you drive an electric car?”
El-Sayed answered, “I drive a plug-in hybrid made right in the United States. The bigger question about cars, though, is why the president just started a trade war — or escalated a trade war with Canada, that’s about to make all of our cars, especially the internal combustion engine cars, so much more expensive.”
Watters then cut in to say, “You want to get rid of the internal combustion engine.”
El-Sayed responded, “No, I don’t. Who told you that?”
Watters protested, “That’s what the Green New Deal says.”
El-Sayed responded, “No, that’s not what the Green New Deal says. It says that we could build renewable energy opportunities. Look, I’m not going to defend the Green New Deal. But what I’m telling you, though, is that we could make a whole lot more amazing jobs if we actually invested in renewable energy.”
Watters then cut in to say, “Wait, you’re on the record as backing the Green New Deal, Abdul.”
El-Sayed responded, “Look, I’m just going to tell you this: Are you opposed to the idea that we could reduce energy costs and create jobs in Michigan? Are you for that?”
