Christian Bale’s interpretation of the Caped Crusader in three Batman films cast the superhero as a tormented soul who always tried to the right thing.

Sometimes it didn’t work out as planned.

Bale’s appearance today in Aurora, Colo. offers no such shades of gray. The actor quietly traveled to the town where a gunman burst into a midnight screening of “The Dark Knight Rises,” killing 12 and injuring scores more.

Bale’s visit wasn’t tied to the studio behind the film, according to The Denver Post. He came on his own and met with several survivors.

For that selfless act, Bale should be considered, well, super.
