A new article in GQ magazine offers some sad context to the recent passing of acclaimed actor James Gandolfini.

The Emmy winner, who passed away June 19 at the age of 51, is the subject of a haunting magazine portrait sure to intrigue and sadden the actor’s fan base.

The article explores Gandolfini’s uneasy relationship with fame following the debut of The Sopranos as well as his personal demons. We learn about the actor’s alleged issues with drugs and alcohol, a subject which came up during his 2002 divorce proceedings. He also would refuse to show up to work some days and later shower the cast and crew with gifts to make up for his absence.
