Following the shooting that left two dead at a Lafayette theater during a July 23 showing of Trainwreck, comedian Amy Schumer received an open letter imploring her to join the fight for gun control fight. The letter also urged her to see it as an extension of the feminist struggle. Schumer responded with, “Don’t worry I’m on it. You’ll see.”

The open letter came from Sarah Clements, who describes’ herself as “a Sandy Hook survivor’s daughter,” who believes heinous attacks like the one on Sandy Hook Elementary and the Wisconsin Sikh Temple are tied to “anti-feminism and anti-woman ideals.”

Clements’ letter is posted on Medium.com, where she tells Schumer:

A showing of your film — an honest, unapologetic celebration of women’s rights to our bodies, decisions, and independence — was the place a middle-aged-man who, “opposed to women having a say in anything,” chose to commit a mass shooting.

Clements later lists the George Zimmerman’s shooting of Trayvon Martin in self-defense, the 2012 Clackamus Mall attack by a gunman who was stopped in his tracks by a concealed carry permit holder–Clements does not mention the actions of the concealed carry permit holder–then Sandy Hook, regarding which she says, “My mother survived that last one.”

She continues:

Six of her colleagues — all women — were killed, as were 20 first-graders. After the shooting, I dedicated my life’s work to gun violence prevention, and what I noticed immediately was that women are taking the reins in the movement. From the voices of mothers who lost their children to those of daughters who lost their mothers. From the calls to action by young women on campuses to women who work and are raising children they want to protect, in communities of all types. Women have truly begun to lead the gun violence prevention movement — and they are winning.

In short, an offer was issued–Amy Schumer was asked to take up gun control as a women’s cause; a feminist cause.

And Schumer responded on August 1 by tweeting: “Don’t worry I’m on it. You’ll see.”

Missing from Clements’ letter was any mention that Sandy Hook Elementary and the Lafayette movie theater were both gun free zones–there was 100 percent gun control in both. You can’t really campaign for more than 100 percent gun control, can you?
