Canadian pop star Justin Bieber expressed his support for the Black Lives Matter movement on Friday, claiming that racism is “more prevalent now than I have ever seen in my lifetime.”

“I am a white Canadian and I will never know what it feels like to be an African American but what I do know is I am willing to stand up and use my voice to shine light on racism, because it’s a real thing and it’s more prevalent now than I have ever seen in my lifetime,” the 23-year-old Bieber wrote in a lengthy Instagram post, which was accompanied by a yellow and black image of the Black Lives Matter logo. “We are all Gods children and we are ALL EQUAL.”

Although it is not the first time that Bieber has commented on political issues, it is the first time that he has endorsed a group with radical left-wing leanings.

In 2014, a video surfaced showing a 15-year-old Bieber using the word “n**ger.” Within a week, a second video showed a 14-year-old Bieber changing the lyrics to his hit song “One Less Lonely Girl” to “One Less Lonely N**ger.” The singer changed other lyrics to say, “If I kill you, I’ll be part of the KKK.” The singer faced intense backlashed and later apologized for making the racist joke.

Bieber has previously stated that he “does not believe in abortion,” describing it as “like killing a baby,” and has also described his native Canada as the “best country in the world” due to its universal healthcare system.

Last July, Grammy Award-winner reportedly turned down an offer of $5 million to perform at the Republican National Convention after his manager threatened to quit if he accepted the deal.
