During a December 2 skit on Saturday Night Live, female cast members hinted at the multitude of sexual assault allegations against Matt Lauer and others, and held up a pink Glock handgun as a possible solution.
The skit was called “Welcome to Hell,’ and featured cast members dressed up in 80’s outfits, talking about “habitual predators,” and singing that world is “freaky, it’s nasty, it’s button under the desk Matt.” Variety described this button, saying, “[Lauer’s] office was in a secluded space, and he had a button under his desk that allowed him to lock his door from the inside without getting up. This afforded him the assurance of privacy. It allowed him to welcome female employees and initiate inappropriate contact while knowing nobody could walk in on him.”
The cast members sing about traveling in a pack and walking home with car keys sticking out from between their fingers, making a makeshift claw for safety. One member then holds up a pink Glock and says, “My dad gave me a pink gun.” She pauses while the sound of the action being cycled is heard, then adds, “There’s a lot there.”
The cast members then sing, “Well House of Cards is ruined, and that really sucks. Well here’s a list of stuff, that’s ruined for us.” They go on to list basic everyday activities that are dangerous for women, including “parking and walking and Uber and ponytails, bath robes and nighttime and drinking and hotels.”
The intimation that the pink gun may be part of the solution for stopping sexual predators is actually spot on, as handguns are increasingly the self-defense tool of choice being pursued by more and more women.
On December 2 the Chicago Tribune reported that realtor Sonia Figueroa decided to get a handgun for self-protection after facing a string of robberies and threats while working throughout Chicago. And Figueroa is not alone. On July 23, 2017, Breitbart News reported that a shift in attitudes in Chicago whereby women were arming up for self-defense. AFP reported that one such woman, 71-year-old Marietta Crowder, finally made the leap to gun ownership and that her ownership was coupled with a firearms course. Crowder said, “My husband influenced me and we thought about it a long time. Maybe you need a gun these days, in your house at least.”
On April 4, 2017, Breitbart News reported that stalking victim Dawn Hillyer urged Indiana lawmakers to pass legislation allowing women to carry a gun for self-defense in a situation where they have gotten a protective order against a stalker, ex-boyfriend, ex-husband, etc. Hillyer told the Journal Gazette that women “need more than just a piece of paper to protect themselves”—they need a handgun.
She said, “Firearms are known as the great equalizer and for good reason. When I got a firearm, I finally felt a sense of control again.”
