Actress-comedian and left-wing activist Sarah Silverman is the latest celebrity to lend her social media influencer power to a vote-at-home initiative, which is being launched in the midst of the worldwide coronavirus pandemic. The effort is intended to pressure Congress into expanding the mail-in ballot program nationwide just in time for the November elections.

Sarah Silverman said in a recent tweet that the initiative is non-partisan and is intended to enable people to vote without risking getting sick. In actuality, the legislation was introduced by Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), and Ron Wyden (D-OR), and is being pushed by other prominent Democrats in Congress, including Sens. Kamala Harris (D-CA) and Cory Booker (D-NJ) Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden.

But skeptics on both sides of the political spectrum have warned that such a large-scale effort poorly executed would increase instances of voter fraud and other problems. The left-leaning ProPublica noted that a quickly implemented vote-from-home effort could lead to “increased voter fraud, logistical snafus, and reduced turnout among voters who move frequently or lack a mailing address.”

Rep. Rodney Davis (R-IL) has voiced his opposition to the legislation, saying Wednesday that it could take away election authority from states. “We should not be pushing through unnecessary policies in a time of emergency,” he said in a statement to The Hill.

Supporters of the initiative are enlisting the aid of Hollywood celebrities to promote the measure.

In addition to Sarah Silverman, Khloé Kardashian, David Guetta, and Rita Wilson support the initiative. Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence is pushing the mail voting legislation to her legions of young fans.

‘The best thing we can do to stop the spread of this virus is to stay at home,” the Silver Linings Playbook star said in a recent social media message. “But we still have an election coming up with millions of Americans who have yet to cast their ballot in the 2020 primaries. Which is why you should go to represent.us/voteathome so that you can cast your ballot from the safety of your home.”
