German police said on Saturday they found a pig’s head bearing an “insulting inscription” outside Chancellor Angela Merkel’s office.

A police patrol discovered the animal’s head outside the office in the Baltic sea town of Stralsund in the early hours of Saturday.

A spokesman for regional police refused to be drawn on the nature of the insults, saying only that they were directed at Merkel, who was first elected to parliament in Stralsund 26 years ago.

The conservative chancellor has been criticised by many Germans over her welcoming stance towards the migrants that have poured into Europe over the past year. A recent comprehensive poll reported by Breitbart London showed that across the political and social spectrum, Germans who say Islam does not belong in their country has risen from just over half to more than 60 per cent in two years.

Another recent poll found that 64 per cent of Germans wanted to see Merkel out of office at the 2017 general election.

Although the exact motive, and political leanings of the individuals who left the severed pig’s head outside Ms. Merkel’s office is not known following the police’s suppression of the “insulting description”, the act shows similarities to other recent acts.

Pigs heads, being insulting to Muslims, have been used in protests against rapid Islamisation across Europe in recent years. Breitbart London reported on Christmas Day 2014 on a pigs head and entrails having been hung on a mosque door in Austria. Earlier that year, pigs heads were placed on the scaffolding of an Islamic school being built in Vienna.

In 2015, a pile of pigs heads was dumped outside an Islamic school which had announced plans to convert into a mosque, replete with a dome and minarets. Days before, ‘no mosque’ had been painted on the walls.

The pig has become a symbol of the broader counter-Islamism movement in Europe. Opposing mass migration and the Islamification of Europe, Dutch PEGIDA leader Edwin Wagensveld was arrested in February for refusing to remove a novelty pig hat during cold weather at a protest.
