On Sunday night, the punk rock legends of Green Day joined local the East Bay’s SWMRS to put on a concert to raise money in honor of the victims of a deadly Dec. 2 fire at the Oakland warehouse known as the “Ghost Ship,”where 36 people died.
According to CBS’s LIVE 105, the performance took place at 1-2-3-4 Go Records in Oakland. Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong’s son, Joseph “Joey” Maciano Armstrong, is a drummer in the SWMRS.
Among the Green Day songs played were “Armatage Shanks”, “Stuck With Me”, “Scattered”, “Waiting”, and “Murder City”.
Green Day also performed a tribute concert to the “Ghost Ship” on December 10, during during LIVE 105’s “Not So Silent Night“.
Billie Armstrong said the tribute to the Ghost Ship was also a defense of communities like those in the Oakland warehouse which have come under intense criticism across California since the disaster. “These were people… Just trying to have a moment where they can all just celebrate just being artists and being weird and having fun,” he said.
Only 50 lucky people were allowed into the 1-2-3-4 Go Records concert, due to fire hazard.
The “Ghost Ship” fire has resulted in crackdowns on similar warehouses throughout the Golden State. Eviction notices have started pouring in.
In Los Angeles, city officials held a meeting to discuss the city’s unpermitted housing issues, using a building at 931 E. Pico Blvd. as an example of hazards tenants can face.
Still, others suggested that with investments and proper attention, these warehouses could receive the necessary permits and save countless lives.
