Turkish officials say at least nine are dead and dozens injured after a high-speed train crashed into another train in Ankara on Thursday.
The deadly collision occurred at the Marsandiz railway station, roughly five miles from the Ankara railway station. Ankara governor Vasip Sahin told reporters the train was headed to the southern Turkish city of Konya when it smashed into another train evaluating the station’s tracks.
“There were many injured people waiting to be rescued,” one witness told CNN. Investigators are working to determine why the train conducting the inspection was on the primary commuter line.
Anadolu Agency, Turkey’s government-funded news outlet, reported 206 passengers were aboard the locative at the time of the crash.
Yunus Yener, chairman of the Union of Chamers of Turkish Engineers and Architects, tweeted that safety issues regarding the tracks had been flagged “for some time.” “The accident is murder!” the tweet added, according to the BBC.
In July, 25 people were killed following the derailment of a passager train near the town of Corlu.
