Gunmen in two armoured vehicles crossed into Israel from Egypt near the Kerem Shalom crossing on Sunday, before one exploded by itself and the other was destroyed from the air, the Israeli military said.

Spokeswoman Lieutenant Colonel Avital Leibovich said the gunmen had hijacked the vehicles from an Egyptian outpost where they had killed between ten and 15 border guards before crossing into Israel.

Leibovich said the army was conducting searches for remaining gunmen. She did not know how many were in the vehicles and if any had survived.
