The BBC is reporting that police have used tear gas and water cannons against protesters trying to enter Gezi Park in Istanbul, Turkey.
The park is near the city’s Taksim Square and is the same park on which protesters converged for two weeks of “anti-government unrest” in June. Police used tear gas and water cannons when breaking up those demonstrations as well, after which they sealed off the square with armored vehicles.
CNBC reported that the protesters moved through neighborhoods across Istanbul destroying property after being driven out of Gezi Park in June.
Nonetheless, Taksim Square remains a central site for demonstrators “demanding justice for a protester who was killed by police in the [earlier] clashes.”
