Islamist militant Eldar Magatov was killed by Russian police as they carried out security operations and searches in preparation for the Sochi Winter Olympics.

Magatov “was a suspect in numerous attacks on Russian targets” and was killed “in a shootout in…North Caucasus.”

According to The Guardian, Russian police continue to seek two female jihadists and other Islamists connected with North Caucasus insurgents “who threatened to attack the [Winter Games].”

Magatov “lead an insurgent group in the Babyurt district of Dagestan.”

Following last month’s attacks on Volgograd, Islamists warned that attacks would continue unless President Vladimir Putin prevented the Games from taking place. Instead, Putin vowed the “complete destruction” of the terrorists responsible for the Volgograd bombing.
