On March 26th Egyptian Field Marshal Abdel Fattah al-Sisi resigned his post as minister of defense so he can undertake “a presidential run he is expected to win.”
According to The Wall Street Journal, Sisi “tendered his resignation to Egypt’s interim president, Adly Mansour, and to a leadership military council that had already endorsed his candidacy in January.” Sisi had to resign because “Egyptian law requires presidential candidates to be civilians.”
On March 26th Sisi also aired a recorded message on state television: “I announce my intention to run for president and ask for your support.”
Sisi enjoys “massive public support” for his ousting of Muslim Brotherhood president Mohamed Morsi.
On March 24th a “mass death sentence was imposed… on 529 people, alleged supporters of the Brotherhood who had been charged with killing a police official in August.”
