WASHINGTON (AP) — Israeli Ambassador Ron Dermer, a foe of the Iran nuclear deal struck by the Obama administration and Western powers, is telling Republicans that Congress must stop the pact.

Dermer met Wednesday morning with some 30 to 40 Republicans at the invitation of Rep. Steve King of Iowa. Dermer told the group that Congress is the last backstop and no deal is better than a bad deal.

Rep. Trent Franks of Arizona said the main message was Iran cannot be trusted.

Congress is in the midst of a 60-day review period of the deal designed to slow or halt any attempt by Iran to produce nuclear weapons in exchange for the lifting of economic and other sanctions.

The leaders of State, Energy and Treasury departments were briefing lawmakers on Wednesday.
