Jan. 21 (UPI) — Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is a candidate to undergo surgery on his right foot this off-season, general manager Brandon Beane told reporters Wednesday.
Beane and Bills owner Terry Pegula spoke at length about the future of the Bills’ organization during a news conference in Orchard Park, N.Y.
“He could have to have something done to his foot potentially here soon,” Beane said. “But it would not impact OTA [organized team activity] stuff if he does.”
Allen initially sustained the injury during a win over the Cleveland Browns on Dec. 21 in Cleveland. The 2024-25 NFL MVP dealt with lingering soreness over the final weeks of the Bills’ season, which ended with a divisional-round loss to the Denver Broncos on Saturday in Denver.
The Bills fired coach Sean McDermott two days later.
Allen completed a career-high 69.3% of his throws for 3,668 yards, 25 scores and 10 interceptions over 17 regular season starts in 2025. He also ran for 579 yards and 14 scores on 112 carries.
Allen completed an NFL-best 71.6% of his throws for 556 yards and a league-high four scores, with two interceptions, over two appearances this postseason. He ran for 99 yards and two scores over the Bills’ two playoff games.
The 29-year-old star quarterback now has an 8-7 postseason record since joining the Bills as the No. 7 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. He was a four-time Pro Bowl selection through his first eight seasons.
The Bills signed Allen to a six-year, $330 million contract extension in March. Pegula said Allen “didn’t have any input” on his decision to dismiss McDermott, who posted an 8-8 postseason mark in nine seasons as Bills coach. Allen is expected to have input during the Bills’ search for a news coach.
Pegula said he “didn’t want to speculate,” when asked if McDermott would have kept his job if the Bills advanced to the AFC Championship Game.
Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinski, Washington Commanders run game coordinator Anthony Lynn and former New York Giants coach Brian Daboll are among the candidates the Bills requested to interview for their head coaching vacancy.
The Bills also scheduled an interview with Joe Brady, who served as their offensive coordinator the last three seasons and quarterbacks coach in 2022.
