Nearly 200 students were detained late Friday during a demonstration marking the first anniversary of massive student protests against tuition increases in Quebec province.

Police spokesman Jean-Bruno Latour said two large groups of students — numbering about 100 people each – had been detained in downtown Montreal.

The demonstrators were calling for the authorities to form a commission to investigate police activities during last year’s unrest.

The 2012 protest involved thousands of people, who eventually succeeded in persuading the Quebec government to cancel the tuition hike.
