March 6 (UPI) — Heated Rivalry and Kiss of the Spider Woman were among the titles to win big at the 37th Annual GLAAD Media Awards Thursday.
The ceremony, which will stream on Hulu March 21, celebrates LGBTQ representation across film, television, music, gaming and news.
“The most popular series and media appear on this year’s list of nominees because LGBTQ stories are a winning strategy for a global audience who demands bold and original storytelling,” GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement about nominees.
“As the media landscape shifts, gaming, local news and podcasts have also emerged as proud homes to LGBTQ talent and narratives,” Ellis continued. “In the face of rising anti-LGBTQ disinformation, GLAAD remains relentless in our mission to work across all forms of media and to tell the fair and accurate stories that protect values of family, fairness and freedom for all.”
Jacob Tierney’s show Heated Rivalry, starring Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams as rival hockey players who fall in love, received the accolade for Outstanding New TV Series.
“Making queer art is hard. It’s hard to get it made. It’s hard to get it seen. I think a lot of us in this room know that and we owe so much to the shows that come before us…” Tierney said.
