Jan. 14 (UPI) — The surviving members of Renee Good’s family and Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer Jonathan Ross each have retained or are seeking legal representation ahead of likely legal cases.

Good’s family has retained the services of the Chicago-based Romanucci & Blandin law firm that represented the family of George Floyd, who died while pinned to the ground by a Minneapolis police officer in 2020.

Attorney Antonio Romanucci traveled to Minneapolis on Wednesday to meet with the family, the law firm told The Minnesota Star Tribune.

Shortly after Good’s death was reported on Jan. 7, the Romanucci law firm called the deadly shooting “utterly senseless.”

The law firm issued another statement on Wednesday, saying the Good family calls for “peace.”

“Be Good. That is the clear message from her family as Renee’s with to the world,” the law firm said. “They do not want her used as a political pawn, but rather as an agent of peace for all.”

The law firm’s attorneys seek accountability for Good’s death and to “honor her life with progress toward a kinder and more civil America,” the law firm said.

Romanucci and attorney Ben Crump worked together to secure a $27 million settlement from Minneapolis in 2021 to end a lawsuit filed by Floyd’s surviving family.

Ross is getting legal counsel from attorney Chris Madel, who seeks the state Republican nomination to replace Tim Walz as Minnesota’s governor during the 2026 election.

Ross was treated after being struck by Good and continues to suffer from internal bleeding from his injuries, the Department of Homeland Security announced on Wednesday, according to The Hill.

Madel isn’t representing Ross but is helping him file a petition to have the Justice Department provide Ross with legal representation in the matter, The Minnesota Star Tribune reported in a separate story.

The request comes amid dual state and federal investigations into Good’s shooting death.

Federal regulations require the Justice Department to provide legal representation for federal employees who are sued, subpoenaed or charged with a crime arising from work done while fulfilling their duties.

Madel also is helping Ross to determine the best way to handle investigations being done by the FBI, the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office and the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office, while seeking federal legal representation.

Ross has not been accused of any crimes or named as a defendant in a lawsuit.

Good is shown on several different video recordings appearing to use her vehicle to block ICE officers on a neighborhood street in Minnesota while they tried to free one or more vehicles from the snow on the morning of Jan. 7.

When ICE officers initiated an arrest, Good is accused of running into Ross with her SUV at which point he says he shot her in self-defense.

Good, 37, is survived by her three children, parents, siblings and her widow, Becca Good, who was standing outside the SUV Good drove on the morning she was shot and killed.

Both were participating in local ICE watch activities that monitor and challenge federal immigration law enforcement.
