NEW YORK, Oct. 16 (UPI) — The Rainmaker Season 2, which premieres on USA Network Friday, finds Milo Callaghan’s fledgling attorney Rudy Baylor enjoying the success of his first big courtroom win, but sticking with the struggling law firm that hired him when no one else would.
“It was a smart start to the story. I think lots of people think that when they arrive at or meet their goal, on the other side of that is the oasis, nirvana, ecstasy and, in reality, usually, when you hit the top of the mountain very quickly, you’re over the peak and you’re going down the other side,” Callaghan, 28, told UPI in a recent Zoom interview.
“At the end of Season 1, he achieves everything that he set out to achieve in a professional and personal sense. He loses his relationship, but he builds this new family. He makes all this money for this woman Dot [Karen Bryson] that he loves,” the actor explained.
“He finds justice for [Dot’s son] Donny Ray, and also, he garners the respect that he feels that he didn’t get in that first episode when he comes to the table and John Slattery fired me.”
The adaptation of John Grisham’s best-selling novel of the same name sees Rudy team up with a ruthless ambulance chaser named Bruiser (Lana Parilla) and Deck, her resourceful paralegal, who can’t pass the bar exam (P.J. Byrne).
“She’s tough. She’s the voice that you don’t want to hear, but you need to hear,” Callaghan said about Bruiser.
“She’s actually a real friend because regardless of whether it feels like she’s acting in Rudy’s interests, according to Rudy’s point of view, she’s always acting in Rudy’s interests, according to her highest sense of morality and moral character.”
Guiding Rudy is the idea that who you fight FOR is more important than a potential payday in deciding whether to take on a new case.
“I can’t speak for the writers as to whether or not they meant to explore this, but it’s understanding that money is just currency,” Callaghan said.
“Money is just a means of measuring value and life is about value exchange and another side of that is time and energy,” he added.
“It’s this attractive resource that seems to be a sure and fast way to change your circumstances. But, the reality is, people only really want money for the connection that it facades as. I think most people would happily trade all their money for a really good friend or for a good family relationship.”
Spoilers ahead.
Bruiser and Deck also share this perspective, leading the trio to try to help underdog clients, who wouldn’t otherwise have a voice.
In Season 2, Rudy enlists his former client Dot to help him, Bruiser and Deck get a young boy out of juvenile detention where he is being abused.
“He inherently has this gift of understanding that the relationships of the people around him are most important,” Callaghan said. “It’s the adage of, ‘Did the pirates find the treasure X, or was it the friends they made along the way?’ And the reality is that it’s almost always the friends.”
Slattery plays Leo F. Drummond, managing partner at the powerful law firm where Rudy worked for a few short hours before being canned for challenging the boss during a meeting with the staff, which includes Rudy’s girlfriend Sarah (Madison Iseman), who doesn’t leave when he does.
Season 1 ended with Sarah blindsiding Rudy during a trial with details about a personal trauma Rudy had shared with her in confidence.
The betrayal understandably led to their breakup.
“We didn’t really explore that at the end of last season, this fallout of this relationship that they had, because she had gone so far down the road of this Faustian pact that she’d made that I think she fell out of Rudy’s circle,” Callaghan said. “He had no interest in talking with her anymore.”
Season 2 sees Sarah trying to make amends with Rudy at the bar he bought with his pay from Dot’s lawsuit against a hospital that covered up that a nurse on their staff had intentionally killed 15 people.
Instead of responding to her heartfelt speech, Rudy simply replies, “We’re closed,” as Deck listens in without Sarah knowing.
“It’s the best, right? That’s all credence to the writers and Michael [Seitzman’s] vision,” Callaghan said.
“A lot of people have said to me that that’s their favorite scene and I think that all I did was look at Maddie and be with her and she really carried that,” he added. “I was given the gift of just reacting that day. I think she did a really special job.”
Merle Dandridge joins the cast season as Sarah’s new employer, Amanda Vonn.
“It’s hard to beat John Slattery from last year and I know that that casting process was a long, tough one,” Callaghan said.
“Michael and the producers found Merle, who is just phenomenal and such a graceful, warm presence on set, such a giving actress that it was really a joy to work with her and just cool to see her do her thing,” he added. “She breathed life into that character. I’m really excited for people to see her.”
Amanda Vonn doesn’t have time for games.
