Nov. 18 (UPI) — A New York City police officer who allegedly posed illegally as an ICE officer was indicted and released on bail.

Atickul Islam, an NYPD sergeant, was arraigned Tuesday in Manhattan in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York and pleaded not guilty in front U.S.; Magistrate Taryn Merkel.to one charge of impersonating a federal officer.

Islam, 29, was released on an unsecured, $25,000 recognizance bond.

He allegedly used the alias John W. Anderson and reportedly told a victim that he was a field director with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

According to the indictment, Islam allegedly instructed the victim and family to report to an ICE facility by April 15 this year.

Defense attorney John Arlia told the judge that the NYPD suspended Islam without pay and seized his badge and service weapon.

Islam was “absolutely adamant about fighting these charges,” Arlia said.

Records indicated that Islam typically patrols housing projects in the Bushwick area of Brooklyn. The exact incident location was not available, although once document stated it allegedly occurred in Queens.

Merkel granted a request by federal prosecutors that Islam be barred from the victim’s residence.
