Feb. 11 (UPI) — American Lindsey Vonn underwent a third surgery on the left leg she broke at the 2026 Winter Olympics, she announced Wednesday on social media.
Vonn, who sustained a complex tibia fracture during the women’s downhill Sunday in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, said the injury would require multiple surgeries.
The three-time Olympic medalist, who had been aiming to become the oldest (41) Alpine Olympic medalist at Milan-Cortina, has not said if she plans to return to the sport.
“I had my third surgery today and it was successful,” Vonn wrote on social media. “Success today has a completely different meaning than it did a few days ago. I’m making progress, and while it is slow, I know I’ll be OK. Thankful for all of the incredible medical staff, friends, family who have been by my side and the beautiful outpouring of love and support from people around the world.
“Also, huge congrats to my teammates and all of the Team USA athletes who are out there inspiring me and giving me something to cheer for.”

Several current and former star athletes, including Coco Gauff, Shaun White, Naomi Osaka and Michelle Kwan, offered well-wishes to Vonn on her social media post.
Vonn, who tore the ACL in her left knee last month during her final downhill race before the 2026 Winter Olympics, said that injury did not contribute to her crash Sunday at Tofane Alpine Skiing Centre.
Fellow American Breezy Johnson won gold in the women’s downhill with a time of 1:36.10. Germany’s Emma Aicher and Italy’s Sofia Goggia earned respective silver and bronze medals in the event.
