KABUL, Afghanistan, March 27 (UPI) —

A father in northern Afghanistan has sold his twin newborn daughters because of poverty, a hospital official says.

The babies were sold for between $380 and $570, Khaama Press reported Wednesday.

The mother of the children died during delivery at a hospital in the northern province of Baghlan, said provincial hospital chief Dr. Khalil Musadiq.

The family’s economic condition prevented her from going to the hospital earlier, he said.

Musadiq said the twins were healthy when delivered.
