James Holmes, the alleged Aurora, Colorado movie theater shooter who murdered 12 people and shot another 58, received a $26,000 grant from the federally-funded National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. The NIH is a subsidiary of the Department of Health and Human Services.

It is not rare for Ph.D. students to receive such stipends. Nonetheless, it is troubling that the federal government invested in a man who quit the program after his first year. University officials say they have done nothing wrong with regard to Holmes; “To the best of our knowledge at this point, we think we did everything that we should have done,” said Donald Elliman, university chancellor.
