Vandals in one of Virginia’s most important swing counties set a Virginia woman’s yard sign supporting Mitt Romney on fire Monday.

Libby Stevens of Leesburg, Virginia planted a pro-Romney sign in her yard on Monday only to find “two poles and charred grass” less than an hour later.

“I thought someone would steal it. I never thought anyone would set it on fire,” Stevens told Virginia’s ABC affiliate. “That’s way beyond vandalism to me to set something on fire in someone’s front yard, just a few feet from their home with a bunch of dried leaves.”

An ambulance driver first spotted the flames and alerted Stevens and her family.

Stevens said over the past weeks, thieves have stolen three smaller Romney posters from her fence.

“It’s scary and shameful. What kind of country do we live in that you can’t put a sign in your yard?” Stevens said.

Stevens has now put up a smaller Romney sign in her yard next to the scorch marks in addition to an American flag.
