At a fundraiser over the weekend, Michelle Obama told the crowd that the most important race in the country was defeating Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY). “It is critical that we get them to the Senate,” she said of several candidates, including “Michelle Nunn, Alison Grimes, Natalie Tennant.” Alison Lundergran Grimes is McConnell’s Democratic Senate opponent.

Grimes has attempted to shift away from the Obama administration in her quest for her Senate seat, instead criticizing “Washington politicians.” Grimes has attempted to pose as a moderate, touting her NRA credentials and releasing pictures of herself with a rifle. Grimes told reporters that she was “kickin’ butt and takin’ names” in her race after attending the fundraiser. She has also been avoiding the cameras in her home state.

Michelle continued, “It is critical, because we all know that it’s not enough to elect Barack Obama president if we don’t give him a Congress that will help him keep moving this country forward. We know that now. We’ve seen it. We’ve experienced it.”
