On April 3rd, the Florida senate passed warning shot legislation by a vote of 32-7. The state house had already passed the measure, so it now goes to Gov. Rick Scott (R) for his signature.
If signed, this legislation will make it legal to fire a warning shot as a last step before shooting an attacker who has launched an assault.
According to Fox News, the bill “was partly inspired” by the case of Marissa Alexander, a Jacksonville woman who was charged for firing a warning shot “near her estranged husband during an altercation.”
As Breitbart News reported on March 20th, Alexander was convicted and served 21 months of a 20 year sentence. Thereafter she was freed but faces retrial on July 28th.
The legislation is sponsored by representative Neil Combee (R-Auburndale), who wants the law in place before Alexander’s retrial begins.
