The Oklahoma legislature voted overwhelmingly Friday night to repeal the Common Core math and English standards for its state’s schools and to replace them with standards developed by the state. The bill now heads to Gov. Mary Fallin’s (R) desk for her signature.

As local Fox News affiliate Fox23.com reported, the state House voted 71-18 on the bill to reject the Common Core standards. The House also voted 68-19 in favor of an emergency clause that would have the law go into effect as soon as the bill is signed by Governor Fallin. The Senate passed the bill 31-10 with the emergency clause.

State Rep. Jason Nelson (R) said the bill will bar the federal government from having authority over Oklahoma education standards.

Restore Oklahoma Public Education (R.O.P.E.), a grassroots group of parents, teachers, and citizens, said on its Facebook page, “OK, Gov. Fallin, it’s on you, the people have spoken.”
