The death toll was decidedly low in Chicago this weekend with only one citizen killed from the city’s continuing gang warfare, but another 18 were wounded in incidents throughout the city. One man was even shot nine times and lived to tell about it.

Several were shot on Saturday, the Chicago police said. The lone death was also recorded on Saturday.

The death occurred some time on Saturday afternoon when two men were shot in North Chicago. Witnesses say that shots rang out when a group of young men gathered and began arguing on the street.

More shootings came on Sunday.

In one case, a 17-year-old girl was shot and wounded in the South Side Englewood District. The girl told police she was arguing with another girl when two males rode by on motorcycles and fired at her hitting her in the stomach. She was taken to Stroger hospital and is listed in stable condition.

In another Sunday shooting, a 15-year-old boy was shot in the Woodlawn neighborhood in what police called a gang retaliation attack. The 15-year-old victim is a known gang member.

Also, a man in the city’s Uptown neighborhood was attacked and shot nine times on Sunday afternoon. The wounded man, though, managed to drive himself to Weiss Hospital and is now listed in stable condition.

Authorities announced on Friday that after years of wrangling and planning, a new trauma center will be opened on the city’s South Side to serve a growing number of shooting victims.

The violence in the Windy City brings this year’s totals to over 2,100 shot and 312 killed.
