Shannon Lamb—the alleged gunman behind Monday morning’s murder of Delta State University professor Ethan Schmidt—took his own life after being pulled over by police in Greenville, Mississippi, Monday night around 10:30 pm.

Breitbart News previously reported that Lamb is believed to have murdered his own girlfriend in Gautier, Mississippi, before going to the Delta State campus to kill Schmidt. His girlfriend’s name was Amy Prentiss.

According to the New York Times, when Lamb was pulled over, he “was only about 35 miles to the west of the [Delta State] campus.” Lamb reportedly jumped out of his car and “ran into a wooded area,” from whence officers heard a gunshot. Lamb was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.

News Channel 3 reports that police were able to speak with Lamb “at some point” between the murder of Schmidt and the time at which Lamb was pulled over. When they spoke to him, he assured them “he wasn’t going to jail.”

Police investigating the case say they have yet to arrive at a motive for the two murders.

Delta State University campus policy “prohibits the possession of pistols, firearms or other weapons in any form by any person other than duly authorized law enforcement officials on its institutions’ premises or at any of its institutions or student functions off campus, regardless of whether such person possesses a valid permit to carry such pistols, firearms, or weapons.”
