As the Obama administration presses to speed up the admission of Syrian refuges into the U.S., the possibility of a Paris-style attack in New York City, Chicago, or any metropolis large enough to provide anonymity, becomes a reality. And with that reality must come the understanding that a Paris-style attack in the U.S. will lead to Democrat calls for more gun control, especially for expanded background checks, the end of private gun sales, and licensing requirements for gun owners.

Two things must be noted: 1. At least two of the attackers in Paris are reported to have made their way into France from Syria. For example, Reuters reported that “a Syrian passport [was] found near the body of one of the gunmen who died in Friday night’s attacks.” 2. Yet the U.S. has already begun bringing Syrian refugees into the U.S. via New Orleans and National Review reports the Obama administration is pressing “to speed admission of more Syrian refuges.”

So it is really no longer if we will be attacked but when. A perilous clash of civilizations that has played out from afar since the first bombing of the World Trade Centers in 1993 now has an opportunity to play out much closer to home; in our homes and schools and theaters and places of worship. And when it happens you can rest assured that many of the very Democrats pushing for Syrian refugees will be among the most vocal supporters of more gun control.

This author has long been concerned that a firearm-relate terror attack on U.S. soil would be seized as an impetus for more gun control. The fact that Democrats and their allies in the gun control movement have proved impervious to evidence only solidifies the concern that a terrorist with an AR-15, AK-15, or semiautomatic handgun, would lead to calls to “clamp down” on gun sales in our country.

Consider Hillary Clinton, she has already used the campaign trail to talk fondly about how the Australian government used confiscation via buybacks to “clamp down” on gun sales and possession in that country. Or consider Martin O’Malley, who ignores the fact that his gun controls correlate with a Baltimore in shambles and uses the campaign trail to push for expanding background checks, banning “high capacity” magazines, and licensing all gun owners.

Speaking of expanded background checks, perhaps nothing demonstrates Democrats’ refusal to accept facts and evidence like Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly’s ongoing push for background checks. Giffords is pushing expanded background checks even through her attacker passed a background check to get the very gun he used in attacking her. And Breitbart News previously reported that Kelly claims the Colorado Springs Halloween gunman–who passed a background check for his guns–is a testimony to the need for more background checks.

Obama is the same way. His calls for more gun control following the October 1 Umpqua Community College (UCC) shooting were legendary, and each call ignored the fact that the UCC gunman passed a background check for his guns.

So the pattern is already set. Facts do not matter, and, more specifically, the demonstrable failure of background checks is beside the point. Democrats and their willing surrogates in the gun control movement are determined to expand background checks anyway, thereby eliminating the private gun sales Americans have enjoyed since 1791.

In the event of a firearm-related terror attack expect the Democrats to tell us that our safety depends on expanding background checks to keep guns out of the hands of terrorists. In doing this they will ignore the fact that expanded background checks already exist in France, were private gun sales are illegal, and yearly mental and physical background checks are required for anyone who would own a gun. Moreover, entire categories of weapons are banned from ownership in France–including the very weapons the Charlie Hebdo attackers used to gun down 12 innocents during their January 7 attack, not the mention the weaponry attackers were able to obtain and use to kill upwards of a 150 innocents in Paris on November 13.

We would all do well to learn from CNN analyst Tom Fuentes, who surveyed the landscape after the horrendous attacks in Paris and noted that Europe pretends gun control works but “it just doesn’t.”
