Republican presidential candidate Sen. Rand Paul says the United States should pause immigration from 33 countries.

Even as Americans debate the merits of Donald Trump’s proposed temporary Muslim immigration ban, libertarian-leaning Rand Paul went to bat for a travel ban from countries that he called “high-risk.”

“You can go too far in generalizing and sort of blaming all Muslims, but you can go too far in saying, ‘You know what, this has nothing to do with a radicalization of a religion,'” Paul told Jake Tapper on CNN. “We do need to press pause and say, ‘Let’s get a better grip on what’s been going on.'”

Paul has now come forward with the most comprehensive plan to block migration for national security reasons since Trump’s controversial comment.

Rand Paul made sure to note that his plan would be temporary.

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt suspended naturalization proceedings for Germans, Japanese, and Italians on December 8, 1941, the day after the Pearl Harbor attack.
