President Donald Trump defended his decision to fire FBI Director James Comey after a meeting with former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.

“He wasn’t doing a good job. Very simply,” Trump replied today when asked by reporters in the Oval Office why he decided to fire the FBI Director.

Trump added that the news didn’t affect his meeting with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak held earlier in the morning.

The president’s letter to Comey released on Tuesday said that it was “essential” to find new leadership in the FBI to restore public trust in the institution.

“While I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation, I nevertheless concur with the judgement of the Department of Justice that you are not able to effectively lead the Bureau,” Trump wrote, notifying Comey that he was fired immediately.
