Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), ranking member of the House Budget Committee, said on Tuesday that President Donald Trump’s proposed 2018 budget would put wealthy people in control of the United States.

“It’s a planned takeover of the country by the wealthy,” Jayapal said, agreeing with the other Democrat panelists at the left-wing Center for American Progress in Washington, D.C. during a panel discussion.

Reps. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), Barbara Lee (D-CA), and John Yarmuth (D-KY) joined Jayapal at the event, entitled “How Trump and Congressional GOP Budgets Leave Behind the Forgotten Men and Women.”

All of the panelists said that Trump’s budget would help wealthy people and big corporations. CAP posted with its video of the event:

In his inaugural speech, President Donald Trump promised to lift up the ‘forgotten man and woman’ who have been left behind—the same platform that propelled him to victory in 2016. But his proposed budget released in May reveals that his priorities lie with corporations and the 1 percent—at the expense of nearly everyone else.

[Trump] calls for slashing education, workforce training, job-creating infrastructure investments, and more. His budget would gut protections for clean air and water and even take food away from children and families—all to pay for tax cuts for millionaires and corporations.

The panelists claimed that women, the disabled, racial minorities, and poor families would suffer the most under Trump’s budget.
