Republican Senate candidate Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee responded to pop superstar Taylor Swift on Tuesday after the singer smeared the congresswoman on Instagram.
“She is a talented young woman,” Blackburn said in an interview with Fox Business reacting to Swift.
Swift said on her Instagram account Sunday that Blackburn “appalls and terrifies me” and lied about her voting record.
In response, Blackburn said that Tennessee voters probably cared more about her endorsement from the National Rifle Association and her ‘A’ rating with the organization. She added that the Fraternal Order of Police and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce also endorsed her.
Blackburn also reminded the singer that she helped pass the Music Modernization Act, a bill that would that would help artists get paid more streaming music services. President Donald Trump will sign the bill on Thursday.
“I’ve been very active in that and Taylor Swift will benefit by that,” Blackburn said.
Trump also reacted to Swift’s decision to smear Blackburn, defending the Republican candidates as a “tremendous woman.”
“I’m sure Taylor Swift has nothing or doesn’t know anything about her,” he said on Monday, adding that Swift’s comment made him like her music “25 percent less.”
Blackburn also defended her record of supporting women.
“Of course I support women and I want violence to end against women,” she said. “I’ve been very active in abuse shelters and child advocacy centers. I’ve been advocating for women in equal pay since I was 19 years old.”
