Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill has announced his plans to run for the United States Senate seat currently held by Democrat Sen. Doug Jones (AL).
Merrill held a press conference Tuesday morning at the state Capitol, where he said he would seek the Republican nomination for the seat in the March 3 primary.
“This is not something that I have pursued,” Merrill told Alabama residents outside of the state Capitol. “This is something that pursued me because people have continued to bring up to me the need to have a conservative reformer who’s a proven winner to offer themselves as a candidate for this United States Senate seat.”
Merrill’s announcement focused on the border crisis, which he considered to be an ongoing “fiasco.”
Others who have announced their candidacy for the Senate seat include U.S. Rep. Bradley Byrne (R-AL), former Auburn University football coach Tommy Tuberville, Alabama state Rep. Arnold Mooney, failed 2017 Senate candidate Roy Moore, and Stanley Adair of Haleyville, AL.
