The NCAA official who had headed the investigation of the Miami football program was fired just as the Hurricanes were registering the best late signings of any program.
Al Golden accepted his “dream job” at the University of Miami more than two years ago. It has not been as “dream-like” as he might have anticipated. The Hurricanes have been under the shroud of NCAA investigation and the historic program has gone only 13-11 over the last two seasons.
However, it has been a “golden” couple of week for the Hurricanes.
While Miami had a lackluster performance on February 6, they have had the best post-Signing Day of any program in the country. It began last Wednesday when the Hurricanes landed four-star running back Corn Elder, a dynamic athlete who also excels on the basketball court.
The Hurricanes followed it up by landing the surprise signature of wide receiver Derrick Griffin. The 6’7″ playmaker was thought to be torn between Texas A&M, the school where he had been committed to for months, and Auburn.
Both players are major gets for Miami although Griffin may be more likely to spend the next two years in junior college.
Here are a few other post-Signing Day recruiting notes:
- Elite Junior College defensive tackle Toby Johnson signed with the Georgia Bulldogs over Auburn and Mississippi State. Johnson is recovering from tearing his ACL, but, once he recovers, could be a dominant force on the interior.
- Da’Shawn Hand, 2014 defensive end from Woodbridge , VA, has been named the #1 prospect by Rivals, Scout, and 247Sports. Robert Nkemdiche was #1 in all three services throughout the entire season for the 2013 class, and Hand certainly hopes to duplicate that success.
- According to Scout, Texas is out in front for 2014 with eight commitments. Under Mack Brown, the Longhorns have quickly added commitments and are often nearly done with their recruiting class before summer starts.
