Kansas City 4, Atlanta 3 (10 innings)

Alex Gordon singled home David Lough for the winning run as the Royals beat the Braves, 4-3 in extra innings Wednesday night. Alex Wood (0-2) took the loss for Atlanta, while Aaron Crow (4-3) got the win.

The Royals raced out to a quick 3-0 lead after three innings, with Gordon hitting a home run in the first. The Braves then came back to tie the score in the seventh, on a two-out, two RBI single by Justin Upton, setting up Gordon’s heroics in the 11th.

Washington 3, Arizona 2

The Nationals moved back above the .500 mark with a 3-2 win over Arizona behind the solid pitching of Jordan Zimmermann (11-3). Zimmerman allowed two runs in the first inning but only one hit over his final six innings. Wade Miley (4-7) took the loss for Arizona.

Tyler Moore hit a home run in the fourth for the Nats, his first since being recalled from AAA Syracuse. Rafael Soriano worked his 21st save in the ninth.

Philadelphia 7, San Diego 5 (13 innings)

Two errors by Padres second baseman Logan Forsythe allowed two runs to score in the 13th for a 7-5 Phillies victory. Tommy Layne (0-2) took the hard-luck loss, Joe Savery (1-0) got the win and Papelbon notched his 15th save.

The Phillies tied the score in the 8th with a two run homer by Delmon Young. In the 13th, Forsythe bobbled a ball hit by Ben Revere following an eight-pitch at bat, then threw wildly to home, allowing both Phillies runs to score.

New York Mets 3, Chicago White Sox 0

Shaun Marcum (1-9) pitched eight shutout innings for his first win of the season, the Mets scored three in the 5th and beat the White Sox, 3-0 Wednesday night. John Danks (1-5) allowed only one earned run in 7 1/3 innings but took the hard luck loss.

Chicago’s Alexi Ramirez had two hits for the Sox but also had the critical error that allowed two runs to score in the 5th. Bobby Parnell worked the ninth for his 13th save.

Miami 5, Minnesota 3

The Marlins continued to stomp on the Twins’ wild card hopes, beating them yet again Wednesday night, 5-3. Kevin Slowey (3-6) pitched three scoreless innings for the win, and also singled and scored the game-tying run in the 5th. Scott Diamond (5-7) took the loss for the Twins.

Placido Polanco and Jeff Mathis hit home runs for Miami, who is 13-9 this month and assured a winning month after an historically poor start to the season. The Marlins have allowed three runs or fewer in 10 consecutive games, winning seven.
