American Tyson Gay will not race in the world championships in Moscow after he tested positive for a banned substance. He holds the record for the 100-meter dash.
Gay would not reveal the substance, but he said the US Anti-Doping Agency touched base with him after a May test came back positive. He will have his Sample B tested as soon as possible. Gay broke down as he talked about it. From ESPN:
“I don’t have a sabotage story. I don’t have any lies. I don’t have anything to say to make this seem like it was a mistake or it was on USADA’s hands, someone playing games,” said Gay, who fought back sobs as he spoke. “I don’t have any of those stories. I basically put my trust in someone and I was let down.”
Asked who that person was, Gay replied: “I can’t really say it. Sometimes a human being naturally, generally trusts somebody. That’s what people do.”
He rose to fame in 2007, but was plagued by many injuries. His hamstring and groin were constant troubles and had surgery to repair a hip. But last month he won the 100 and 200 at nationals and it appeared he was back to his 2007 form. Many could not wait to see him face off against Usain Bolt at the world championship, but now it will not happen. He will not race in Monaco and fly to the USADA in Colorado Springs, CO to witness his test “B” in person.
Gay could not be more specific while discussing the test. From ESPN:
“I have to go over everything with USADA first,” said Gay, who finished fourth at the London Games last summer. “I will take whatever punishment I get like a man. I do realize and respect what I put in my body and it is my responsibility.
“I’m going to be honest with USADA, about everything, everybody I’ve been with, every supplement I’ve ever taken, every company I’ve ever dealt with, everything.”
