Detroit Tigers starter Michael Fulmer won the American League Rookie of the Year Award on Monday.

New York Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez placed second in the voting with four first-place ballots and Cleveland Indians outfielder Tyler Naquin came in third.

The Detroit Tigers righty went 11-7 with 132 strikeouts and a 3.06 ERA. Fulmer became the first Tiger to win the award since stablemate Justin Verlander did so ten years ago.

“I got kind nervous talking to Verlander,” Fulmer told reporters on a conference call. “He’s been texting me, saying me and him can have [Rookie of the Years] 10 years apart. Now I’m rooting for him get the Cy Young.”
