Call him “Captain Obvious.” MSNBC’s Chris Hayes has a firm grasp on what everyone in the universe knows: his show is tanking in the ratings.

In a fawning puff piece about MSNBC in this month’s New Yorker magazine, Hayes admits that his show has not quite hit the stride he and his network expected when they put him at 8:00 PM against Bill O’Reilly earlier this year.

“Obviously, the numbers are bad right now,” Hayes told the mag, but then he expressed caution with regard to making any drastic changes to the unwatchable show that serves as a weak lead-in for the network’s “quarterback,” Rachel Maddow.

Following the ratings “tickles the worst instincts human beings have on casual inference,” Hayes contends. It’s that kind of every-man vernacular that really opens Hayes up to the widest possible audience every day.
