Still reeling from the ATF HQ’s announcement that the AR-15 ammo ban is off the table for now, The Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times simply came unglued on March 12–describing the NRA as a “ridiculous” group that “aligned itself with violent criminals” to defeat the ban.
According to the WAPO, the NRA proved itself “even more ridiculous than usual” for opposing a ban on M855 ammo; a ban which the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) said was not necessary.
On March 4 FOP executive director James Pasco said the M855 round “has not historically posed a threat to law enforcement.” He stressed that the round “is not typically” used against police officers, yet the Washington Post descried the NRA as “more obviously wrong” than usual and claimed the ban’s failure has “police officers understandably worried.”
The LA Times was no less apoplectic. According to the Times, the NRA “aligned itself with violent criminals” in order to stop the ban.
Moreover, the NRA “bullied” the Obama administration to stop the ban.
The LA Times tried to fan the flames of hysteria by reminding readers that the M855 round can be fired out of AR-15 handguns. But what they did not do is respond to House Judiciary Committee chairman Robert Goodlatte’s (R-VA-6th Dist.) central argument against the proposed ban.
Millions upon millions of M855 rounds have been sold and used in the U.S., yet the ATF has not even alleged, much less offered evidence, that even one such round has been fired by a handgun at a police officer.
