If presidential elections are national debates about American identity and purpose, what makes 2016 most remarkable is our inability to reckon with who and what we’ve become.

In 2016 America, a national candidate’s most compelling appeal isn’t the policy substance of a given position, but, rather, the position’s appeal to the past.

“… and we will bring jobs here again.”

“… and we will bring the middle class back again.”

“… and we will make America great again.”

“Again” is the theme, political code acknowledging a pervasive sense of cultural and economic loss in the country. A loss no one person can fix, a loss about which no one seems to know what to do.
