Del Rio Sector Border Patrol agents arrested two groups of smugglers and illegal immigrants following vehicle pursuits. One of the chases ended when the alleged smuggler lost control and crashed into a building.
Brackettville Station Border Patrol agents attempted to stop two suspicious vehicles on U.S. Highway 55 near Campwood, Texas, on April 19. As the agents attempted to stop the vehicles, a 2004 Honda Accord and a 2012 Toyota Camry, both vehicles failed to yield and fled the scene, according to information provided by Del Rio Sector Border Patrol officials.
The driver of the Honda pulled over a short time later and both occupants took off on foot. Border Patrol agents followed the two people on foot into the brush. After a short chase, the agents arrested the driver, a 21-year-old Mexican national with Legal Permanent Resident status and his passenger, officials reported.
The Toyota driver continued to flee and led agents on a high-speed pursuit. As the pursuit traveled toward Campwood, deputies with the Real County Sheriff’s Office took over and continued the chase into the town. The driver eventually crashed into another vehicle and then into a building. Agents arrested the driver a 19-year-old U.S. citizen and his suspected illegal immigrant passenger.
The agents seized the vehicles and arrested the two smugglers and their human cargo. All were turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations special agents for further investigation and possible charges related to human smuggling and immigration violations.
CBP officials did not disclose the nationality of the arrested migrants. Under current Coronavirus-protection protocols, it is possible the illegal aliens will be expeditiously deported to Mexico.
“Smugglers have no regard for the value of human life, or the safety of the American public and the illegal aliens they smuggle,” Del Rio Sector Acting Chief Patrol Agent Doyle E. Amidon, Jr. said in a written statement. “Thanks to the diligence and devotion to duty of the agents of the Brackettville and Uvalde stations, Homeland Security Investigations, as well as our state and local partners, we were able to resolve this reckless chase, apprehend these criminals, and seek justice for those affected.”
