The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner released the cause of death for legendary film director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele on Wednesday.

According to the report, the Reiners died on Sunday, December 14 from “multiple sharp force injuries,” officially confirming initial reports that said the famed Hollywood couple died from wounds consistent with stabbing.

No other cause of death was revealed for the Reiners. Paperwork from investigator Jennifer Hertzog and two deputy medical examiners declared the manner of death a “homicide.”

Rob Reiner’s son, Nick Reiner, has since been held in custody on suspicion of murder without bail. Several friends of the Reiners say that Nick, who had struggled with drug addiction and mental health issues for years, was seen in a heated argument with his parents at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party just prior to their deaths. According to Deadline, Nick’s arrest occurred “mere hours after his sister Romy discovered their parents’ mutilated bodies in the master bedroom of their Brentwood home on the first night of Hanukkah.”

During a brief court appearance on Wednesday, the 32-year-old Nick Reiner reportedly wore an anti-suicide vest and did not enter a plea, preferring to wave his right to a speedy arraignment until January 6. Speaking with reporters outside the courthouse afterwards, Nick’s attorney, Alan Jackson, who previously represented Kevin Spacey and Harvey Weinstein, asked the public to withhold judgement as the legal process unfolds.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Reiners’ surviving children, Jake and Romy, said they were “devastated” by the loss of their beloved parents and asked for privacy during this time.

“Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day,” the two said through a family spokesperson on Wednesday. “The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”
