Shadow Business Secretary Chuka Umunna has announced his bid for leadership of the Labour Party in a wobbly, wind-swept video recorded in the town of Swindon.

Umunna says: “I’m pleased today to be announcing that I will be standing for the leadership of the party. I think we can and we should be wining in seats like in Swindon. North, South, East, West we can absolutely do it as a party.”

The video, and Umunna’s less-than-charismatic performance, has drawn laughter on social media, with some already suggesting he deliberately made it bad to show himself as a “man of the people”, rather than a slick media operator. If so, he clearly failed:

In 2013, it was revealed that someone had edited Umunna’s Wikipedia entry to say he “may end up as the UK’s Barack Obama.” The edit came from his own office.
