The two-time Oscar-winning British actress Emma Thompson has chosen an unusual tactic for supporting the Remain campaign in the European Union (EU) membership referendum, by opting to insult Britain. In doing so she has attracted the vitriol of Leave supporters who accuse her of “doing our country down”.

The 56-year-old Hollywood actress was speaking in Germany at a press conference for her latest film, Alone in Berlin, when she was asked about the upcoming referendum. On previous occasions she has accused Britain of racism, this time she used the opportunity to describe the country of her birth as:

“A tiny little cloud-bolted, rainy corner of sort-of Europe… a cake-filled misery-laden grey old island.”

When pressed as to how she would vote, Mrs. Thompson confirmed she was will be voting to remain in the EU, reports Sky News. She replied:

“I feel European even though I live in Great Britain, and in Scotland as well.

“So of course I’m going to vote to stay in Europe. Are you kidding? Oh my God, of course. It would be madness not to. It’s a crazy idea not to. We should be taking down borders, not putting them up.”

Tory MP Stewart Jackson responded to the star’s comments, tweeting that he “couldn’t give a monkeys” about the opinion of the “overpaid leftie luvvie”.

Ukip leader Nigel Farage agreed, describing it as “utterly defeatist and negative”, adding: “We believe in Britain, and that we can thrive as a self-governing, independent nation.”

Mrs. Thompson’s remarks will be welcomed by other Remain campaigners. Celebrity conspiracy theorist June Sarpong may think Britain’s weather is controlled by external factors, but she will agree with the pro-EU sentiments.

On the other hand the views of Mrs. Thompson will not be supported by her fellow Oscar-winning British actor Michael Caine.

As Breitbart London previously reported, the rather more patriotic film star rejects being “dictated to by thousands of faceless civil servants” and favours Brexit in the absence of “extremely significant changes” to Britain’s membership of the EU.
