Police have identified the man who died during the Finsbury Park attack that took place in the early hours of Monday morning as 51-year-old grandfather Makram Ali.

It was revealed in a statement from Metropolitan Police that Mr. Ali had died from “multiple injuries”. Whilst this implies he was killed in the attack, police fell short of confirming this as fact after days of speculation.

Mr. Ali had fallen and injured his leg and was in the process of receiving first aid when the van hit the group of people who had crowded around him.

Scotland Yard said in a statement: “Mr Ali came to the UK from Bangladesh when he was 10 years old. He was married with four daughters, two sons and two grandchildren. He regularly attended the local mosque and enjoyed visiting the local park with his grandchildren.

“Met Police Commissioner Cressida Dick and senior investigators met with his family at New Scotland Yard today.”

In a statement, Mr. Ali’s family described him as a peace-loving and gentle person who had no enemies.

After the revelation of the identity of the man arrested at the scene, new details have emerged, including that the mental health of the suspected attacker is being investigated. He continues to be held by police as a suspect.

The Guardian reports the questioning of “troubled” 47-year-old Darren Osborne continues and the investigation is presently pointing towards a self-radicalised individual who acted alone in a premeditated attack.

The Telegraph reports Osborne had been heard to express “increasingly antagonistic views” on Muslims since the London Bridge attack, in which radical Muslims killed 8 and injured a further 48. All three attackers were shot dead by police response teams.

Whilst 10 were injured in the attack which took place near a mosque by Finsbury Park Station, four remain in hospital — and two in critical condition.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forwards.
