SAO PAULO, June 12 (UPI) — Brazilian police used tear gas on Thursday to block a small group of World Cup protesters from making their way to Corinthians Stadium in Sao Paulo.

The protesters reportedly planned to stage an anti-World Cup demonstration at the stadium where the opening match was scheduled for Thursday afternoon.

At least one person was arrested.

Many Brazilians are angered that the government invested $15 billion, drawn mostly from public funds, in the soccer tournament. Anti-World Cup protesters argue that the billions should instead have been invested in social projects, including housing and salary increases for public servants.
