On July 24 a doctor wounded in an armed attack by a psychiatric outpatient was able to pull his own gun, shooting and stopping the gunman.

The incident occurred around “2:20 p.m. in an office at the Mercy Wellness Center of Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in Darby, Pennsylvania.”

According to USA Today, outpatient Richard Potts allegedly shot and killed a caseworker before an unnamed 52-year-old psychiatrist used “his personal firearm” to shoot Potts “three times.”

Fox News reports that the caseworker was a 53-year-old female who accompanied Potts to the doctor’s office. And witnesses say they “heard yelling before the gunshots.”

Yeadon Police Chief Donald Molineux said he is certain the doctor’s actions saved numerous lives. He said: “Without [the doctor’s] firearm… [the patient] could have went out in the hallway and just walked down the offices until he ran out of ammunition.”

The suspect is currently hospitalized in critical condition.
